The Boy Scouts of America voted today to end its ban on gay scouts. Here’s why it’s not actually helpful for anyone:

1. The ban on gay leaders, staff, and adults is still in place. This means that gay teens can remain a part of scouting until they’re 18 but aren’t allowed to do anything for the organization thereafter, including being youth counselors, troop leaders, camp staff, or any other volunteer, nor can they work for the national or regional organization itself.

2. There is nothing whatsoever that says you have to be nice to the kid you let in. You don’t have to treat them with respect, compassion, or even basic decency. In fact, you can spend every meeting lecturing the the troop on what it means to be “morally straight” and say that means not being gay. Considering the majority of Boy Scout troops are sponsored by churches, that’s going to be a problem.

3. Many of the people who have fought for the change expressed joy, saying that this means young boys will not be made to feel like there is something wrong with them, and they will not have to feel the sting of homophobia. This change doesn’t actually accomplish that (even within the limited world of scouting) for two reasons:

a. They don’t have role models within the organization. In fact, they’re specifically banned from having anyone like themselves to look up to. This matters when there are entire sections of the Boy Scout Handbook and ‘curriculum’ about developing into a healthy adult and making smart sexual choices (namely, not having it until marriage); and

b. The change in policy says “There’s nothing wrong with you…yet. You’re a kid. Once you’re an adult, you’ll become a predator.”

Is it a step in the right direction? I suppose so, but only in the same way that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was a step up from decades of witchhunts…and I think we all know how that worked out.

The following info is from Gold Derby’s Emmy categories thread. They get insider information from the studios and networks These guys have Emmy voters on their site, they’ve been doing this stuff for years. And this is what they said specifically about the acting…

They have apparently changed the process since the last time I actively paid attention (which, for the record, was circa West Wing’s heyday). Apparently my previous post was inaccurate: the network/show can submit people itself, then others can submit themselves as well. I’m sorry for any confusion and clusterfuckery I may have caused.

the girl in this image is kaitlyn hunt, a high school senior in indian river county, florida. kaitlyn hunt is an upstanding student with an exemplary record and plenty of extracurricular activities. she’s in the choir, she’s a cheerleader, she’s a basketball player, and she was even voted “most school spirit” in the school’s yearbook.

on february 16th, she was arrested for lewd and lascivious battery on a child age 12-16 for being in a same sex relationship with a fellow 15 year old student. the relationship started when kaitlyn was 17 and her girfriend was 15. as soon as kaitlyn turned 18, her girlfriend’s parents went to the police, had her arrested, and got her expelled from school. not only that, but she had previously already been kicked off the basketball team for being in a same sex relationship.

kaitlyn’s girlfriend INSISTS that the relationship is 100% consensual, but the law doesn’t grant her any legal say in the matter, so her parents are able to press charges regardless of her opinion. and because of that, kaitlyn is facing two years of house arrest and a year of probation. they never spoke to kaitlyn’s parents or the school to say they had a problem with the girls dating. they simply went to the police and got her arrested.

it would be very simple for anyone to argue that age is the defining factor in this situation, but you and i both know that’s total bullshit. the girls were minors when they started dating. the parents stated that “there is no way our daughter is gay.”

this was driven by the homophobia of those parents, plain and simple. if this was an 18 year old male and a 15 year old girl, nobody would give a shit. it happens ALL the time in high schools across the country. but because this young woman, who planned on being a nurse, is now facing felony charges because she was in a same sex relationship.

this is not okay. we need to show our support for kaitlyn and send a message to florida legislators that the selective enforcement of laws like this is NOT okay and that we will NOT stand for this.

if you’d liike to support kaitlyn’s cause, you can sign this petition, and you can donate money to help pay for the family’s legal funds here.

if you’re from florida, you should also find and email your representatives and tell them selective legislation biased against homosexuals, especially teenagers, is simply NOT OKAY!!!!

Ok, here’s the thing:

1) This is not “selective legislation biased against homosexuals.” OP probably meant “selective prosecution,” since the law is orientation-neutral - that is, it impacts both gay and straight couples equally.

2) This is in Florida. Florida is, in fact, notorious for going after all sorts of underage couples - gay and straight. They’ve made the news for prosecuting sexual acts as ‘battery of a minor’ when both members of the couple were underage - one involved a (heterosexual) pair of 16-year-olds engaging in consensual oral sex. Florida has made clear throughout the past decade or so that they are incredibly active in prosecuting sex with people under 18; they believe it’s a deterrent that will stop teenage sex. They’re wrong, but they as a legal system have decided this is where they’re going to put their efforts.

3) The girlfriend’s parents are homophobic. No one is going to argue against that. They’re assholes, and they are indeed targeting the girl based on the fact that they don’t believe their own daughter is gay. That’s reprehensible…but not the fault of the state of Florida. Once a crime of assault has been reported by the person with the authority to do so (as in, the parents of a minor who has been allegedly assaulted), the state has to take over. If a state has decided that it’s going to be lax about enforcement of a particular law, they can let it drop - but Florida, with its strict law and its very strict enforcement, is going to continue prosecution. Flat-out. They are going through the exact same process for this girl as they do when the parents of a heterosexual 15-16 year old girl freak out to find out that their little baby is no longer a virgin.

Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. But then, I think all laws that criminalize consensual sexual activity are ridiculous. The state of Florida thinks otherwise, and that decision has nothing at all to do with the orientation of the teenagers in question. It’s obnoxious, but it’s equal-opportunity obnoxiousness.

It’s not actually a decision that “Glee” (read: the people in charge of the show and/or at FOX) makes. Glee decides which episodes to submit for the series nomination, but they have nothing to do with the actors. Who is submitted, for which episodes, and for which categories (see: Max Adler going out for ‘lead’ a couple years ago), is entirely up to the person’s team - namely, the person’s agent. Chris and Lea and Matt and Jane and so on have teams that are proactive about submitting them for awards, regardless of whether or not you actually had “a lot” to do in a season or just an episode or two where you were featured. That’s an even murkier area when you’re talking about supporting categories.

Darren’s team? More than a little busy with other things - most of them far more likely to bring him good things and be more important to him than Emmy submissions, especially because there is no way he would be nominated due to Glee’s weird-ass category issue. They’re stuck in comedy because they have songs. His best stuff this year wasn’t funny. It was wrenching and touching and he does devastated better than any 10 actors I know, but that doesn’t get you a comedy nomination. I would love to see him go up for something at the Globes this year because that isn’t divided by comedy/drama once you get to the supporting categories.

I think it’s only being buried alive if your identity is something other than that as which you pass. If your identity is as a queer person, or a genderqueer person, and you pass as something binary, then that would be suffocating. If your identity is as a gay male, but you were born female, passing as a gay male is liberating because it means what you are is how you are seen.

Now, there is an inherent conflict: If, for example, you identify as female and pass as such, but you also relate strongly to your trans* identity - or at least recognize its importance in your life because it has indelibly shaped the person you are, then there are times it can feel as though you are being deceitful and hidden by not talking about the things people don’t see by looking at you. But again, the feeling of being “buried alive” generally seems to come from passing as something other than how you identify. Which makes sense, given that by the end of SBB, the protagonist realizes zie isn’t male-identified.

A young man screamed antigay slurs at another man before killing him on Friday night in Greenwich Village.

And this is just the most recent in a string - this week two men were bashed coming out of a West Village hotspot bar, and a couple weeks ago two men were kicked to the ground and called faggots in broad daylight next to Madison Square Garden/Penn Station.

Personally I define ‘winning’ not by whether I can get a couple hundred extra back on taxes by filing jointly; I define it by whether I am afraid to walk down streets at night and how legitimate/rational that fear is. We’re not winning right now - we’re not even close.

Fun fact: Out of 11 regular seasons of Project Runway, only 2 winners have been openly...
